Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes... Trapping is very much needed in Wing Chun and if you get good enough at trapping it can actually be used in a street fight. I know that from experience. But I like what the first answerer said. Better not to fight at all. In any martial art you are going to learn some form of defense and trapping can be really effective if you practice it so why wouldn't you want to learn it.

Yes you will need trapping in a "street fight". If your goal isn't to beat the person to a pulp forcing him to run away or knock him unconscious then you might possibly want hold the guy for police to arrive, or if he just gives you more trouble than you expect, trapping is essential.
Not only that, it's part of the art. You don't around picking things apart just because you don't see the value in it. There is value and it's one of the things that makes Wing Chun a complete martial art.

Trapping occurs in most street fights whether the fighters realize it or not. Trapping is not limited to the parries and the intercepts that we see in Wing Chun and Pentjak Silat. Trapping includes the lock up of arms that occurs when one guy tries to take another guy to the ground. Many police departments teach pain compliance techniques that could also be characterized as trapping.
One of Bruce Lee's first students, Jesse Glover said that Bruce Lee taught him how to enter each range of fighting seamlessly. One of the reasons trapping is so important is so that you know how to handle yourself against another person who is familiar with trapping.
You need to learn what to do when your opponent is trying to apply a standing lock or a pain compliance technique. Trapping is a critical range of fighting to learn to handle yourself in unarmed combat. It may not get as much press in the fighting world as it used to, but it's still something you should know.

It's essential to wing chun. Trapping is an excellent skill to have and you never know if you'll need it in a street situation or not.

That view is lacking in experience and wisdom.
Of course I am going to use the tool against multi enemy situations. Against 10 or 20, in a confined area or alley, of course I'm going to trap people's arms and use them as human shields. Why wouldn't I improve the odds in my favor.
If it's just some bar fight about two guys wanting to slug each other out to impress women, that's their problem. Those guys don't need trapping.

Yes, trapping is essential for wing chun
You won't ever need any fighting techniques in street fights, if you are smart enough to avoid them.

Well what I've noticed is that practicing trapping helps with dexterity which is important in an actual fight, so you'd be better off practicing it even if you never use it.

Dude martial arts isnt all about kicks and punches you may think you can win a fight by 1 punch or a kick but if the opponent grapples you what good is a punch or a kick. Now stop asking stupid questions
