It is actually the most useful thing that you can know but not always in the most obvious way.
Being used to combat situations through training enhances confidence and reduces panic when confronted with an actual combat situation. This reduction of panic may allow you to talk or work your way out of the situation without the need for violence.
Practising a martial art keeps you fit which might help you escape if you need to.
If violence does ensue and you need to defend yourself your 'muscle memory' from your training will come into play and you will act instinctively to defend yourself and disable your assailant.
If they do manage to hit you, you will be much less shocked by the impact than a person who is not combat trained because your body will be used to the feeling of being struck and be able to recover quickly. Your mind will have learnt during training that pain does not always mean defeat so you should bounce back from impact. This will probably shock your assailant and may cause them to run.

martial arts gives you self confidence, strength in mind, fitness it helps keep you focused and to bury your fear deep down. Posture is good and most of all important in a threat situation.
If you want to pin an attacker to the floor and then call for help that is good (not good if there is more than one of them)
use minimum force if you can without subjecting them to GBH or ABH, you will get arrested too, so be careful

what do you mean like when someone is standing in front of you with a weapon and you are not armed?
with martial arts it's all about resistance and knowing all the pressure points so that you can 'tackle' your way out of a situation.
not too sure about trying to save yourself when someone has a double barrelled shotgun pointed directly between your eyes

It depends on the person. A kick to the groin and a board breaking punch to the ribs will end most fights! But if you freeze up and don't have the courage to strike then your black belt is just a piece of clothing.

not very useful at all unfortunately
in situations not much can be done unless you stay in tune with your martial art ..unlike me ..who quit four years ago

If you need to, you can deflect someone's punch, kick them without hurting yourself.
