Because I am pretty sick. I am getting very irritable and I have not ever really like how I get when I do not train. I act like a very different person.

Does this happen to any one else?

If so what do you do to help yourself?

Yeah, I suppose it depends what kind of training you do?

There have been periods where I have been unable to train and thought I was going to explode so I can empathize with you. I'm lucky (I suppose) in that my preferred art has aspects that don't involve physical sessions in the dojo or excessive energy expenditure. Something else I find very rewarding is making my own weapons! I'm also attempting to learn Japanese ...these are the sort of things that satisfy my MA needs on the days I can't train.

Get well soon!

What do you have/how long have you been out, if I may ask?

It's funny that you bring this up, because I was just suffering from something similar. Last friday, I tore some rib cartilage and I've been just sitting around.

I also act like a very different person. My temper gets REALLY bad, I'm extremely irritable, I find myself struggling to cope with daily stresses, I can't pay attention or remember things for the life of me, I can't sleep, I get lethargic, and I overeat. It was getting to the point where I just couldn't handle it anymore, so I went just went in and trained yesterday.

Usually when I get injured, I just try to work around it. It's often inconvenient, but I prefer it to just sitting around and going crazy. If I'm sick, I usually just take a day or two off, then go back in. But it sounds like you're in a position where you can't do that, so I would probably do what others have said and shadow box a bit.

I have been where you are, and have had to miss training because of illness, injury, etc. I usually try to ewwork around an injury. If I sprain an ankle, I focus on hand techniques or vice versa. Illness is different though, because of the loss of energy, not to mention the danger of infecting others.

I think you mentioned that you were in a traditional art..TKD I beleiev before you started at a MMA Gym? How about working on your TKD kata's? Break them down and analyze them? Learn the application for the techniques? I would be more then willing to help. I do not take TKD, but Okinawan karate, led to Japanese karate, which influenced TKD. Honestly I have watched TKD forms and been able to pick up applications right away, since I come from a style that relies heavily on kata motion for self defense.

If you would like to do this and learn some of the Okinawan applications for your forms I will be more then happy to help. If you are not up for that right now I suggest just light shadow boxing until you get some stamina back. I know ppart of training is seeing the people you train with, so maybe you could just visit. I have been able to pick stuff up just from sitting watching a class when I have been ill or incipacitated. We say that martial arts is 90% mental and 10% physical, so maybe right now is a chance for your focus to be on that.

Maybe even read some books. I know it sucks but hang in there, and feel free to take me up on my offer.

I may be a little insane, but I drug myself and train anyway. (I'm talking about having a flu, not something truly incapacitating.) Just once every few days, and only for a short period.

I load up on decongestant, vitamin B12, caffeine and Advil and try to get a 30 minute sweat - do some cardio mainly, like heavy bag work.

It's probably the worst thing I can do for my body, but it sure makes me feel better mentally. There's something therapeutic about sweating.

I've only had to really lay off training once due to a rib injury. It was horrible - couldn't breathe well enough for cardio, and it really hurt to kick, punch, or lift weights. So I went to Borders and got a book on the history of Asian Martial arts and got a BJJ book from the local library. Training the mind is no substitute for a workout, but at least it kept me focused mentally.

Hope you feel better soon.

well i can barely last the four days between training sessions at judo, so i generally like to go for a run. and when I'm injured, i like to just go on the mat and do physiotherapy exercises. when I'm ill, however, i sit there moping around.

i go to training when i have colds, unless they're really bad.

You have to have varieties in your life. Martial art is dominating your life right now. Get into a steady relationship with a girl and she will help you thru your down time. Get back to Martial Art when your body is ready, don't force it.

yea i feel ya dude

i do mma

i spent a whole month outa the gym (thank you staph)

i shadow boxed like crazy

making every moment as precise as i could

it improved my game quite a bit, is started putting combos together and landing low kicks without them getting blocked

i actually kicked a kid over the other day using a spinning back kick because i had such precise technique and power (and the dumb@$$ stood square to me instead of one leg behind the other)

but give shadow boxing a try and try to perfect every moment of your body

feel your legs push off the ground, your hips twist slightly, your arm extend and your snap outward (right cross)

feel every moment of your body and try to perfect it, you wont be disappointed
