If you can actually learn the techniques really well then yes. The problem lies if you learn the techniques incorrectly then you will always perform them incorrectly. My friend practices Taekwondo by himself but he does it with a twist. He pays somebody twice a month to make sure he is doing everything correctly.
My friend has been doing it for a few months and he told me that his sensei has told him that he has gotten better than some of the other guys in his school. I imagine the reason for that being that he works in a warehouse and can do it for a few hours. He has learned the first two forms perfectly. He has a bag to work his kicks which he has been told that his kicks are very strong.
Don't get me wrong, not everybody can learn this way. Some people need an instructor to direct them better and don't forget that sometimes you can be learning incorrectly.

Karate is effective on the streets, and in real life, it will help you defend yourself, but it is you that can truly make this possible.
To learn you have to go into a dojo, and learn. Dont listen to the first two people, because they have no clue what they are talking about. If you take up karate you are learning a fighting art.

Up to a point . YES .
You can suplement your training by watching some good training dvd`s .
You can watch how its done by some respectable master and gather some precious info , not available by reading a book ( techniques ,speed, timing, finer points of teaching ) . Good thing is ,you can watch over and over . Even slow it down and so on.
There is one big pitfall though . Beware ! You could fall into thinking ,that you know more than you actually do . And theory without practice would ultimately lead into this kind of delusion .
Key word here is respectable source . If you buy some garbage you will just waste your time . But its definitely better than trying to learn from action movie .....

No. Period. You cannot. Karate is good. But you cannot learn any art (nor any sport for that matter) just by watching some DVDs. Sorry. It just ain't possible.

It is better to go to a club. Chances are there will be someone at the club you could meet up with out of class to practice with. I presume that is what you meant. And you actually answered your own question kind of. Videos and books will not correct mistakes. A qualified instructor will. Go for it. And good luck.

No.
You're never going to master the moves, or learn to do them in the proper, effective way without an instructor to observe and correct your mistakes, and other students to practice your moves on.

I think in a classroom or on tv, martial arts are a JOKE. can you really truly learn how to survive in the real world by learning the crap they teach? no! you know damn well those 5 yr olds learning that useless karate stuff in class would get killed in two seconds when up against someone on the streets. so it's pointless! it saves no one!!

Karate doesn't work in a real fight, anyway.
