With all of that in one place I would be VERY careful. At the very least it is going to be sport oriented. Sport oriented classes are great if all you want to do is compete. However sport focus is the exact opposite of self defense. Yes you can use martial sport for self defense, that is not what it was designed for though. Sports are taught to a set of rules that are in place to protect the competitors. This eliminates many of the best techniques.

Karate is a generic term that covers any art that originated in Okinawa. There are many many styles of karate, some examples: Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Kyokushin, Shuri te, etc. some are almost entirely sport some are both depending on the school. There are good and bad schools in all styles of martial arts and martial sports. Most styles of martial arts have traditionally taught schools and sport oriented schools.

Kickboxing and Muay Thai are strictly sports. JuiJitsu can be many things, from one of several styles of Japanese JuJitsu to Brazilian JuiJitsu, some are sports oriented some are self defense oriented.

"karate was proven less effetive then kickboxing" wtf? When, and by whom? were there rules? "the karate fighter is like 17 and the kickboxer is like 25 so more muscle" Who said there was an age differnce? I swear peoples answers get more eignorant every day on here, and idiots that have no idea what they are talkin about. Have you ever seen a good Okinawin karate-ka fight? It looks a hell of a lot like a Mauy thai fighter, with low kicks, knees, elbows, clinch fighting. Now add to that the fact that Okinawin karate has many locks, throws, take downs, sweeps, chokes, it sheds a whle new light on it. okinawin karate has intense body conditioning. Add to that the fact that karate actually teaches you to move out of the way or move in such a way that it minimizes the damage that you tak, where Mauy Thai is about who can take more punishment. All that being said it all depends on the fighter, and whos rules you are fighting under. Karate allows a lot more targets then kickboxing. In the end though ti is the fighter that will determin who wins, not the style.

Wow. That is a seriously hard question to answer! I have trained in JuJitsu for the last 10 years, as well as some kickboxing. I have also trained with people who have backgrounds in Kickboxing and karate. They all have their pros and cons.

Kick boxing is extremely good for cardio vascular exercise and pure power and aggression.

Karate is a much more measured art. You will learn technique and control.

Both have their place in self defence / fights.

It sounds stupid, but there is no one that is better than the other. Both will teach you to kick, punch and block. Both will help you grow in confidence. Both have similar grading systems.

I would also not rule out jujitsu if you are just looking at self defence. It will show you kicks, punches and blocks. But, you will also learn throws, locks, takedowns and ground fighting. All of which are of use.

The only way you can be sure is to try watch a class of each and then try them.

Karate is like learning how to swim by practicing on land.

Kickboxing is like learning to swim in the shallow end of a pool.
