I had a discussion group for one of my classes today and to break the ice we had to tell which person in history we would like to have dinner and conversation with. To make this question relate to the Martial Arts: If you had to pick ONLY ONE Martial Artist in history, dead or alive, recent or historical and of any style to train with for one day, who would it be and why?

Hakuun Doushi, of Hakuun-ryu. One day to train with a recognized (Bugei Ryuha Daijiten) ninjutsu master? You bet your sweet fanny I'd take that!

*edit*

there are dozens of martial artists I would love to train with ranging from Choki Motobu to Ip Man to Royce Gracie to Choy Hong Hi but if I had to pick one it would be James Fig.

he was the first champion of boxing in 1721 when it was a very different style where people would punch, kick, elbow, knee, headbutt, open hand strike, throw, trip, joint lock, choke & ground fight.

there were no rules back then and peoples groins were torn off and their eyes were poked out.

he was also a great swordsman and quarterstaff fighter and he was a soldier too who honed his skills on the battlefield.

he also taught most of the prominent boxers & swordsmen of his time in England.

there was an old story circa 1700s about the old British ways of fighting and it goues somthing along these lines-

"an old britt walked into town with his eye hanging from his face and I said oh my sir your eye is out! and he said if you think that is bad you should see the other rascal and presented to me a fresh pair of bullocks and then we went to the pub for a few pints"

Bodhidharma because I have an affinity for the sages and the martial arts and he is a well noted martial sage. It would take me a while to learn to fight with one arm, but I could manage.

Jet LI or Gordon Liu.... just love them! They are TRUE MASTERS..... and extremely exciting to watch....... (. sorry that's two martial artists).

******* I agree with K-JKD .. my son would just love your answer as he is also into all the great Martial Artists and history's great Asian generals.. they were allround in excellence--->> swordsmen,Martial Artists, strategists, writers etc.. etc.. Juga Liang was one such general but he lived way before the 17' hundreds . he lived in the AD period of history which is wayyyyyy before ----->> he helped Sun Tzu write the art of war book which is still used today by business managers to help pick the right people for their business. This book was originally written in order to find the right generals and right soldiers for battle.( anyways going ona tangent now)!
