i got punched in a taekwondo tournament and got my nose broken, i am now afraid to spar using my hands, even though i have always been more of a legs user, is there anyway of rebuilding confidence to use my hands again?

I've gotten my nose broken during muay thai sparring, and it's not a pleasant experience.

What I've done is i keep my hands up, the hand that is supposed to protect the temple (right as I'm right handed), I keep it close to my nose protecting it, if i see a hook going to my temple i just move it about 3-4 inches, but we wear headgear anyway. My left hand I've trained to counter jabs, following up with jabs of my own.

I also work alot with the legs, i am short, so I do plenty of leg kicks, which keep my usually taller opponents at bay,

In order to rebuild your confidence you must resume sparring, and keep your hands up, and your elbows close (as if you were squeezing your pecs) and your chin down. Also practice practice and practice some more.

Just remember that when people spar you, they are trying to open up your weak points, Guard your centerline targets, your nose is on the centerline,If your fast, learn to use a "stop hit" or if they seem unpredictable jam them up and strait punch, practice drills to correct what you did to open yourself up, and it might help if you punched someone else in the nose in the long run, just remember when you lose in sparring, that its a really great time to educate yourself to better strategies, after all isn't that what you wanted when you took up martial arts? Shrug it off, theres a lot worse things that could have happened, sparring is very unpredictable, look at it this way, maybe he just got lucky, maybe he just threw it out and happened to land it without any real intention, some of the best shots were just time and chance. I know exactly how you feel though, my nose has been broken three times, some people just love targeting the nose, its a real blinding hit, look at it this way, if you punch someone else in the nose, you are now well aware of the effects and consequences from both sides of the coin, you'll be alright!

The only real way your going to regain your confidence is to work yourself back in and continue your training in sparring.

I just recently had a similar thing happen to me, but I'll still spar because I know that it's just a reminder that I need to work/train harder.

so you really shouldn't let it deter you just because you got your nose broken, just chalk it up to good training.

the confidence will return in time, just keep working at it.

Yes. Raise your hand up when you spar to your face. Don't keep it down to your chest. You have a chest pad! Your face however, is completely exposed to anything!

bend your fingers and hit with the palm it should look like a paw. make sure you keep your fingers up and hit hard with the palm and push up but it can kill them! also if you get attacked use your nails and bring their eyeballs down with your hand after hitting the nose. I take taekwondo! So i'm pretty much right.

no..forget about martial arts..you suck...go be an insurance agent dammit

just kiding, loses should make you work harder. And now that youve learned a good lesson by getting punched in the nose, your gonna work hard on your defensive and offensive right, so just work harder

Our students are taught to keep their hands up, but we had a 2nd Degree get cheap-shotted in a tourney last year, getting his nose busted in the process. You can get a facemask for your sparring helmet for additional insurance. (He did. lol)

if you get hurt in a real self defence situation you cant just drop your hands and say come back later im hurt?to be able to fight and/or defend yourself you have to be able to take it as well as give it.maybe you need to work on your eye/hand coordination and blocking.
